Image to Base64 Converter: Create a Data URI

Convert a PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF or BMP image up to 5 MB into a Base64 Data URI in your browser. Base64 is not compression or encryption.

This tool processes its main input in your browser and does not send it to an external API. Fonts and interface assets may load from external providers.

Image to Base64 Converter: Create a Data URI

Choose a supported raster image and this tool reads it with the browser's FileReader API to create a copyable Data URI that includes the MIME type. Small icons and demo assets can be embedded in HTML or CSS with this format.

Base64 encodes binary data; it does not compress, encrypt or protect the image. The encoded text is usually larger than the source file, so a separate image file is often more efficient for large assets. The selected file is limited to 5 MB.

When is it useful?

  • Creating a Data URI for a small PNG icon in a local HTML prototype.
  • Checking the MIME-prefixed text representation of a raster image.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF or BMP image no larger than 5 MB.
  2. Wait for the browser to read the file and create its Base64 Data URI.
  3. Copy the result and test it in the intended HTML or CSS context; keep large assets as separate files.

Example

Input: small-icon.png (PNG image)

Output: data:image/png;base64,... (a PNG Data URI ready to copy)

Who is it for?

  • Web developers working with HTML and CSS
  • Designers preparing small prototype assets
  • People checking a raster image's Data URI representation

Privacy and limitations

The selected file is read in the browser with FileReader and is not sent to a Yula API for conversion. The output is encoding, not encryption, and can be larger than the original image.

Base64 Encoding and Decoding: What It Does and When to Use It

Frequently asked questions

Does Base64 reduce image size?

No. It represents binary data as text and the output is usually larger. Use an image converter or compressor if you need a smaller image.

Which formats can I select?

The file picker lists PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF and BMP. Actual decoding support can vary by browser and target environment.

Is my image uploaded?

The conversion step reads the file locally with FileReader; it does not send the selected image to a conversion API.

Is a Data URI private or encrypted?

No. Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption or access control. Do not embed sensitive images in public HTML or CSS.
